Semblanza / Biography

Othón Téllez nace en la Ciudad de México en 1957. Estudió la licenciatura en pintura en la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda” y a la par estudia Filosofía en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Como artista visual ha participado en 39 exposiciones individuales y más de 90 colectivas, nacionales e internacionales, entre las que destacan: La Consagración de la Primavera, en el Museo Carrillo Gil; Le Sacre du Printemps, obra inspirada en la partitura de Stravinsky, la cual se llevó a cabo en Scott Allan Gallery en Nueva York; y la muestra Fragmentos de un discurso elaborada ex profeso para el Festival Internacional Cervantino en su emisión 2007.

Ha sido premiado en múltiples ocasiones; entre los más importantes está el Premio Nacional de Dibujo en 1990.

Sobresalen las exposiciones en la Academia Nacional de Artes. Sofía, Bulgaria, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Tlaxcala y en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Aguascalientes MAC8, con motivo de sus 30 años de vida profesional, durante las cuales como un evento de formación de públicos estuvo pintando ante los visitantes de los respectivos museos.

Ha incursionado en las artes escénicas, en la realización de escenografía, vestuario, iluminación, producción y dirección artística de diversas obras de teatro, cortometrajes y mediometrajes.

Desde hace más de cuatro décadas, se ha dedicado de manera incansable a la promoción cultural, la educación artística y las funciones públicas. Ha desempeñado cargos en instancias privadas y gubernamentales en los ámbitos estatales y federales destacando la Dirección de la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda”, la Dirección del Centro Cultural “San Ángel” y como Encargado de Despacho de la Secretaría de las Culturas y Artes de Oaxaca.

En el ámbito académico el Mtro. Othón Téllez ha impartido desde 1982 más de 130 actividades referentes a cursos, conferencias, seminarios y ponencias en torno al arte y la cultura, motivo por el cual ha recibido diversos reconocimientos académicos. A la fecha es asesor nacional e internacional en los ámbitos de las políticas culturales y el emprendimiento artístico y cultural.

La disciplina y la pasión en lo que hace es lo que sin duda caracteriza la personalidad de Othón Téllez, quien nunca ha descuidado su producción artística y ha llevado a la par sus labores como funcionario, promotor y maestro. Su vida transcurre entregada por completo a su taller e íntimamente ligada a la reflexión teórica y prospectiva al respecto de la educación, el arte y la cultura.

Othón Téllez was born in Mexico City in 1957. He studied painting at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving "La Esmeralda", and at the same time he studied Philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

As a visual artist he has participated in both national and international exhibitions. More specifically, he has participated in 39 individual exhibitions and more than 90 collective ones, of which the following ones stand out: The Consecration of Spring at the Carrillo Gil Museum; Le Sacre du Printemps, a work inspired by Stravinsky's score, which was held at the Scott Allan Gallery in New York; and the exhibition Fragments of a speech prepared deliberately for the Cervantino International Festival in 2007.

He has been awarded on multiple occasions; among the most important is the National Drawing Award in 1990.

The exhibitions at the National Academy of Arts of Sofia, Bulgaria, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Tlaxcala and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Aguascalientes MAC8 stand out, on the occasion of his 30 years of professional life, during which, as an audience training event, he was painting in front of the visitors of the museums.

He has ventured into performing arts, set design, costumes, lighting, production and artistic direction of various plays, short films and medium-length films.

For more than four decades, he has tirelessly dedicated himself to cultural promotion, artistic education and public functions. He has held positions in both private and public institutions, at the state and federal level. Among these positions, we can highlight the direction of the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving "La Esmeralda", the Directorate of the Cultural Center "San Ángel", as well as when he was appointed as Head of Office of the Secretary of Culture and Arts of Oaxaca.

In the academic field, since 1982, Othón Téllez has conducted more than 130 activities which vary from courses, to conferences, seminars and presentations on art and culture. Hence, he has received several academic awards for these activities. To date, he is a national and international advisor in the fields of cultural policies and artistic and cultural entrepreneurship.

The discipline and passion in what he does is what undoubtedly characterizes the personality of Othón Téllez, who has never neglected his artistic production and has carried out his work as an officer, promoter and teacher at the same time. His life is also characterized by his dedication to his workshop, as well as being intimately linked to theoretical and prospective reflection on education, art and culture.
