Emilio Rojas

Emilio Rojas es un artista interdisciplinario que trabaja principalmente con el cuerpo en el arte del performance, utilizando el vídeo, la fotografía, las intervenciones publicas, la escultura y la instalación. Curso la maestría en artes de performance en el School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) y la licenciatura en la Universidad de Arte y Diseño Emily Carr en Canada, en la especialidad de cine, vídeo y multimedia. Su práctica se involucra en el imperativo ético postcolonial de descubrir, investigar y hacer visibles y audibles los sitios subvalorados o menospreciados del conocimiento, las narrativas y los individuos. Utiliza su cuerpo de manera política y crítica, como instrumento para desenterrar traumas pasados, formas encarnadas de descolonización, migración y poética del espacio. Su practica basada en la investigación esta influenciada por archivos feministas y queer, las políticas fronterizas, el colonialismo botánico y la destrucción de monumentos como protesta. Ademas de su practica artística, Rojas es traductor, activista comunitario y facilitador anti-opresión con jóvenes queer, migrantes y refugiados. 

Su obra se ha mostrado en Estados Unidos, México, Canadá, Japón, Austria, Inglaterra, Colombia,  Grecia, Francia, Alemania, Italia, España, Holanda, Colombia, y Australia. Tambien ha mostrado su obra en Instituciones como Art Institute of Chicago, el Museo de Arte Contemporaneo en Chicago, Ex-Teresa Arte Actual y  el Museo Tamayo en la Cuidad de Mexico,  Vancouver Art Gallery,  Surrey Art Gallery, DePaul Art Museum, y la Foundation Botin. Participó en la 54ª Bienal de Venecia como parte del Pirate Camp: Stateless Pavilion, un programa de residencias para jóvenes artistas internacionales. Actualmente vive en Nueva York, donde es profesor de performance en departamento de teatro en Bard College, y artista residente inaugural de la Fundación Judy Pfaff (2019-2020). Es representado por la Galeria Jose de La Fuente en España.

Emilio Rojas is an interdisciplinary artist who works primarily with the body in performance art, using video, photography, public interventions, sculpture, and installation. He completed a master's degree in performance arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and a bachelor's degree at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Canada, specializing in film, video and multimedia. His work involves itself in the postcolonial ethical imperative to discover, investigate, and make visible and audible undervalued or underappreciated sites of knowledge, narratives, and individuals. He uses his body politically and critically, as an instrument to uncover past traumas, embodied forms of decolonization, migration, and the poetics of space. His research-based practice is influenced by feminist and queer archives, border politics, botanical colonialism, and the destruction of monuments in protest. In addition to his artistic practice, Rojas is a translator, community activist, and anti-oppression facilitator with queer, migrant, and refugee youth.

His work has been shown in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Austria, England, Colombia, Greece, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Colombia, and Australia. Rojas has also shown his work in institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Ex-Teresa Arte Actual and the Tamayo Museum in Mexico City, Vancouver Art Gallery, Surrey Art Gallery, DePaul Art Museum, and the Foundation Botin. He participated in the 54th Venice Bienal as part of the Pirate Camp: Stateless Pavilion, a residency program for young international artists. He currently lives in New York, where he is a performance professor in the Theater Department at Bard College, as well as the inaugural artist-in-residence of the Judy Pfaff Foundation (2019-2020). He is represented by the Galeria Jose de La Fuente in Spain.
